Itinerant Service
Kimi Ora School in partnership with the Special Education Group from the Ministry of Education offer an Itinerant Service to schools the greater Wellington urban area.
The Specialist Teacher Outreach Service provides a specialist special education teacher to work with an ORS funded student in the school they attend.
The specialist teacher is able to provide:
- Frequent regular visits to school to deliver the 0.1 or 0.2 FTE of the ORRS staffing component
- Programming planning with classroom teachers and Teacher Aides
- Resources adapted to student needs and capabilities
- Reporting and attendance at IEP meeting
- Computer / technology assistance and advice with implementation of programmes
- Established liaison processes with Special Education field staff
The additional benefits of an itinerating service are:
- A team of qualified Special Education teachers working on a regular basis with students and classroom teachers in regular classroom programmes
- Reduced difficulty for some schools in recruiting and retaining specialist teachers interested in a long term career path
- Enhanced professional development, support and supervision provided for the itinerating teachers by Kimi Ora and Thorndon Schools, along with the Ministry of Education
- Increased collegial support for the specialist teacher
The school who receives the Itinerant Service transfers the ORS staffing component to Kimi Ora School.
New students are admitted to the itinerent service at the beginning of each term.
Refer to this Education Gazette Article on the service: http://www.edgazette.govt.nz/Articles/Article.aspx?ArticleId=8491
Advice and support can be offered to schools prior to a student’s enrolment.
